Terms of use

Last updated 6 November 2026

In short: SS Markdown is free, open-source software provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. Scorchsoft Ltd accepts no liability for any loss or damage arising from its use, including loss of data. Please keep your own backups of anything important.

1. Who we are and what these terms cover

SS Markdown (the "app") is a Markdown editor for Android made by Scorchsoft Ltd ("Scorchsoft", "we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales. These terms cover your use of the app, however you got it (Google Play, a build from the source code, or any other copy we publish), and of this website.

By installing or using the app, or using this website, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

2. The licence

The app's source code is Copyright 2026 Scorchsoft Ltd and is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the "Apache License"). The full text is in the LICENSE file in the app's repository. In plain terms, the Apache License lets you:

Where the Apache License and these terms differ about the code, the Apache License wins. Nothing here takes away any right it gives you.

Third-party software

The app includes open-source software from other people, each under its own licence: among others a port of the piece tree text buffer from Visual Studio Code (MIT), markdown-it and its plugins, highlight.js, KaTeX, Mermaid and DOMPurify, and fonts under the SIL Open Font License. They are listed with their licences in the NOTICE file and on the app's "Open-source licences" screen. Those licences apply to those parts.

3. The SS Markdown name, logo and icon

The licence covers the code only. Scorchsoft is a trademark of Scorchsoft Ltd. The Scorchsoft name and logos, and the SS Markdown name, logo and app icon, belong to Scorchsoft Ltd, all rights reserved, and are not open source. Section 6 of the Apache License grants no permission to use them.

If you publish a fork, give it its own name and icon. The full policy is in TRADEMARKS.md.

4. No warranty

As section 7 of the Apache License says, the app is provided on an "as is" basis, without warranties or conditions of any kind, express or implied, including any warranties or conditions of title, non-infringement, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. We don't promise that the app will be free of bugs, work on every device, keep working with future versions of Android, or meet your needs. You are solely responsible for deciding whether it is suitable for you, and you take on all the risk of using it.

The same applies to this website and everything on it.

5. No liability

As section 8 of the Apache License says, to the fullest extent the law allows, Scorchsoft Ltd, its directors, staff and the app's contributors will not be liable to you for any damages, whether direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequential, of any kind arising out of the use of the app or the inability to use it. That includes, without limitation, loss or corruption of data or documents, loss of goodwill, work stoppage, and device failure or malfunction, even if we were told such damage was possible.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded under the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you keep your statutory rights.

6. Your files and backups

The app is built to protect your work: it keeps a recovery journal, checks that saves land, keeps version history and asks before overwriting a file another app has changed. Even so, software and devices fail. Please keep your own backups of anything important. Version history is stored on your device and is removed if you uninstall the app (you can export it first).

Your documents are yours. We claim no rights in anything you write with the app, and we never see it: see the privacy notice.

7. Other services

The app works offline. It goes online only to download a Google Font you choose, from Google. If you get the app from Google Play, Google's own terms also apply to that. The app opens and saves files through Android and through the apps and storage providers you choose (for example Files, Google Drive or Syncthing); we are not responsible for them.

8. Support

SS Markdown is free and supported by its community on GitHub. There is no private or paid support channel and no guaranteed response time. Please report bugs and ideas as GitHub issues. Report security problems privately, never in a public issue: see SECURITY.md.

We may change, pause or stop developing the app, or remove it from any store, at any time. Until version 1.0, any release may change behaviour, and only the latest build is supported.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed. The version of the Apache License that came with your copy of the code keeps applying to that code.

10. Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, unless the law where you live as a consumer says otherwise.

11. Contact
